St. Gilgen, Wolfgangsee Lake, Austria
St. Gilgen, the birthplace of Mozart's mother, is located on the
shores of the beautiful Wolfgangsee lake in the very heart of
Austria's Salzkammergut region. In Summer, a fresh alpine
climate and breathtaking scenery make this a true gem and once
the snow falls the entire area converts into a magnificent
Winter Wonderland. Whether visiting the festival town of
Salzburg, taking the cable-car ride up the Zwolferhorn Mountain,
the paddle steamer to St. Wolfgang's famous White Horse Inn,
skiing on the slopes or taking part in water sports, St. Gilgen offers
you the ideal, typically Austrian, relaxing location in which to
do it all.
Compared to the
USA, ownership costs are low in Austria and with the
real estate market having been affected by the lack of
the usual buyers from neighboring Germany, property
prices have not risen the way they have in other central
and eastern European countries recently. Prices of
apartments and houses in Austria are therefore
surprisingly attractive for such a beautiful region of
the Alps. Small but comfortable apartments can still be
purchased for under $75,000 and nice alpine chalets can
be bought for as little as $200,000.
In St. Gilgen,
excellent value can be had in Laim (pronounced
Lime) - an elevated area overlooking the center
of the village, part of the lake and which offers great
vies of the surrounding mountains.
A few apartments
are available at Laim, between $90,000 and $130,000.
They comprise usually of one bedroom, one bathroom, a
separate wash-room, a living room, kitchen, balcony or
terrace and usually a storage room. Although there are
no designated parking spaces, there is always plenty of
parking available directly outside the apartment-houses.
